According to an announcement on the MOTC website, starting Feb. 12, Taiwan-bound passengers who have obtained a Japan passport will no longer need to present an "Arrival in Taiwan" permit to Japanese immigration officers on departure.
Under the new rule, citizens of Taiwan can simply pass through immigration by going through the routine procedure of checking in at the departure gate and submitting their passports to the immigration officers for inspection.
The ministry says that, since March 2018, an additional 3,188 Taiwan-bound passengers have been able to travel to Taiwan without having to obtain an Arrival in Taiwan permit. The notice also states that since Jan. 1, 2019, 3,974 more Taiwan-bound passengers have been able to pass through Japanese immigration without having to obtain an Arrival in Taiwan permit.
Currently, an Arrival in Taiwan permit is required by travelers departing from any of the 25 ports in Taiwan. An Arrival in Taiwan permit allows Taiwanese nationals to go to and from Japan, and vice versa, without customs duty.
The new rule comes following a March 2018 amendment to the Visitor's Passport Act, which states that Taiwan-bound passport holders can enter Japan with a valid Taiwan passport as proof of identity without obtaining an Arrival in Taiwan permit.[Ultrastructural aspects of a beta-cell adenoma of the human pancreatic islets].
